Distant memory time: this End of Evangelion / Linkin Park AMV seemed beautifully bleak and abject to me when I was 14

I’ve been waiting for the year 2015 ever since I watched NGE when I was 12 years old.  I know how silly it sounds, but this feels momentous.

Chapter 13 of The Northern Caves is up, finally.  Apologies for the very long wait.  Hopefully I can write a bit faster now that this chapter (which was unusually tough to write) is done.

[snip]

This excerpts from TNC also continue to creep me the heck out. Brr.

This might be availability, since I just rewatched the series, but I got a real Evangelion vibe from the Space Episode, what with the Angel and the council of men referred to only by numbers.

Not that this makes it less creepy, or anything.

I made the SEELE connection (though in retrospect – it was like “oh, I guess that’s where my brain got that idea”), but TBH I hadn’t thought of the “angel” connection at all, and didn’t deliberately intend the Space Episode to have this resonance.

In any case, though, assuming that pretty much everything I write is derivative of Evangelion is generally a good strategy :)

flowercuco replied to your photodramatic twist: a major character from this manga…

I liked this manga!!!!

I’m really enjoying it!  Very cute art and characters, and a cool premise (from what I’ve seen of it so far anyway)

(The manga is Qualia the Purple)

Yes, this, except Pen Pen is beautiful and perfect (the scene in IIRC ep 22ish where Misato sends him away to the countryside is such a nice metaphor, and frankly what else is Misato going to keep in her freezer, since she certainly doesn’t cook…)

If Pen Pen had been a puppy, I would have no objections to him.

Okay I’ll bite, what’s wrong with penguins?

Nothing against penguins per se, it’s just… discordant within the show. A genetically engineered intelligent warm water penguin that lives in a freezer? Huh? Misato’s apartment should be a place of normalcy where typical domestic stuff happens. A dog is less weird, needs less explanation, and is easier to connect to.

IIRC there was an interview where they said that Pen-Pen was one of the things they came up with when they were trying to come up with ways to reverse various cliches – they thought, “okay, we need an animal mascot character, and they’re in Japan in the summer, it’s really hot, what would be the least likely pet in this situation?  A penguin!”

I can’t believe I’ve never thought of this before, but there are probably some similarities between intense Western fandom for Japanese cartoons (which often contain cultural elements that most Westerners don’t understand, making it feel excitingly strange to Western eyes) and Anglophone academic enthusiasm for French philosophy (often not very well translated, again making it feel excitingly strange to Western eyes)
