I was wondering if I had dreamed up or hallucinated that sports anime whose gimmick was that a baseball team manager ran the team on the basis of a classic business management text, but no, it exists

I kind of wonder if this was the result of some “most boring possible premise” contest or something

softgail asked: sorry I don't follow but I saw ur post about humanity as a super organism n I'm fair sure u just described the Human Instrumentality Project from Evangelion lmao

Yeah I actually thought of that too when I read it!  (It’s not something I came up with, it’s a quote from here – I post quotes out of context tagged as #quotes, as a blog gimmick)

Someone mentions this in the link, but dub Shinji sounds 3 years older, which completely changes the character, and how people see him.

I’m not sure I really perceive an age difference?  The difference I do perceive is that dub Shinji has a much more whiny, aggrieved tone while sub Shinji has a resigned and sardonic tone – dub Shinji is more like “this sucks, this is an outrage, auuughghghg!!!” where sub Shinji is more like “ha ha, this sucks, what did you fucking expect, life is pain, lol.”  Two different sorts of teenage boys, I guess.

the evangelion dub is way better than pretty much any other dub of that time, Not Very Problematic!

I dunno, I have the impression that it’s widely hated?  I’ve seen things like this or this quite a lot.  And Spike Spencer’s Shinji seems kind of … infamous for some reason (I’ve never been entirely sure why – he has an odd voice and does a lot of screaming, I guess, but it’s not inappropriate for the character).

its definitely entertaining! i feel about it sort of the way i feel about the raven series audiobooks i listened to this winter, i think probably: some of the voice actings rly good, some is hilarious (campy or just *odd*), some is… okay.

I’m sure part of it is just that I watched most of the series dubbed the first time (sometimes it was subbed – it was whichever tape the video rental place happened to have at the time – man, remember video rental places?), so I think of the dub voices as just “how the characters sound.”

But it’s also … a lot of the acting is pretty melodramatic and kind of “unprofessional,” but that fits the show?  It’s a show with a lot of people yelling about personal drama, it sort of makes sense that they wouldn’t sound composed or restrained all the time.  The Japanese voices have more restraint (IIRC) but that isn’t necessarily a good thing.

Problematic Opinion: I actually really like the Evangelion dub

This shirt has developed a giant hole on one of the sides that makes it unsuitable for wearing outside of the house, but I can’t bring myself to throw it away

What is the deal with these mood swings though

Yesterday I was all “I cannot do anything but sit silently because the world is a small and paltry and petty and shriveled thing” and today I am all “I AM LELOUCH VI BRITTANIA”

I’ve never seen this anime and I’ve heard it isn’t any good, but it has a very calming theme song
