golemesque-blog asked: wayyyy belated, re: "cutoff phrases" and stock phrases that we both use and think a lot: you've got tourette's, right? i know there's a link between tourette's and OCD and i've got OCD traits, so i wonder if that's what's up with that
Yeah, Tourette’s is comorbid with OCD and I’m pretty sure I have subclinical OCD traits (some of my tics are complicated enough that they really sound more like OCD compulsions when I describe them).
I guess I’d say that it relates to thinks like stock phrases in that stock phrases can “feel right” in the way that performing a tic can “feel right.” There’s a certain sense that there is a groove with a certain shape, and it “needs” to be filled by something, and it’s satisfying to fill it, and frustrating if it remains unfilled
Stereotyped motions or stereotyped phrases feel to me like they’re joining two things that are supposed to be together, like snapping something into a hole shaped like it, or combining positive and negative charges. This was supposed to be there. There we go. Good
