Prior to that, during the interval in which he had not experienced the two-world superimposition, he had seen not only California, USA of the year 1974 but also ancient Rome, he had discerned within the superimposition a Gestalt shared by both space-time continua, their common element: a Black Iron Prison.

The defenders of pasta are shackled by its ball and chain like convicted lifers, or they carry its ruins in their stomachs like archaeologists.

We have come to this decision because pasta is made of long silent archeological worms which, like their brothers living in the dungeons of history, weigh down the stomach make it ill render it useless.

Meanwhile, in 1993 and 1994, Otto Rössler had been assigned to teach an introductory chemistry course according to the prescribed curriculum for medical students, but insisted instead on teaching his own material. This essay by William Giraldi.  (Also the source of the previous quote, “Robinson’s review was a masterwork of spurious sentiment against a handsome man,” which is actually funnier in context, as it comes right after he takes Marilynne Robinson to task for writing awkwardly.)

I’m kind of cheating with the “defender of children” quote, as Giraldi’s over-the-top adoration seems clearly tongue-in-cheek and intended to be funny, and I try to make the humor in my quotes unintentional (not out of any particular desire to be cruel, just because I don’t really want to go around quoting other people’s jokes without attribution).  But then, considering that Giraldi is also the author of this ludicrous book review, I’m not really sure I trust him to actually have any control over his rhetoric.  (He’s clearly capable of unintentional comedy, in other words.)

This is Dawkins the defender of children everywhere, the Dawkins I want to cradle me in his arms.

Robinson’s review was a masterwork of spurious sentiment against a handsome man.
