I’ve always thought it was funny to imagine an AU in which classpect analysis was the basis for the dominant form of psychotherapy (BYB = Freud??) but now I’m thinking “what if ‘inverts,’ in the sense of gay people, were traditionally treated by psychotherapy as though they were ‘inverted’ in the classpect sense“ and … this joke has gone too far

My 7000-word effortpost from over two years ago about Homestuck Act 6 being bad has suddenly started getting notes

finally, the public, is readdy,  for my radical oppinonss………..

hey so if ur bored or have identity issues or both theres a site where u can take a quiz that doesnt take too long and it goes thru 4,500 characters and matches u up to the ones most like u

I got the Narrator from Fight Club!

I’m … Twilight Sparkle?

This is a really neat quiz – I like the continuous sliders, which allow it to get more bits of information from fewer questions, while also allowing freeing you from having to wonder “argh, am I [X] or strongly [X]?  What does ‘strongly’ even mean?” (or the like).

I’m Peter Bishop from Fringe, Remus Lupin, John Cage from Ally McBeal, Chin Ho Kelly from Hawaii Five-O…

basically I’m really boring apparently.

i got dave from homestuck as my #1

i’m not hip enough to know what this means

Oh shit, that’s a good sign.

Also, read homestuck.

counterpoint: do not read homestuck

!!!!!!
why

because HS at its peak is very engaging and involving and it becomes such garbage later, it’s like injecting yourself with Brain Chemical that allows you to feel the purest, most Platonic form of disappointment

it is like warning someone not to date a girl who will be fun for the first few weeks but then ruin your life by repeating the same cycles over and over again in ever more tight and pointless circles

The end of Act 5 is a masterpiece, as is virtually everything leading up to it. That’s enough for me to recommend it :P

But, yeah. The harm-reductionist thing to do is to give up on Act 6 the first time you can convince yourself to.

Yes, also this.  If you have finished Act 5 and are a new convert ready to get Homestuck lore tattooed on your forehead, treat Act 6 with extreme caution

If you are wondering what happens in the plot, just imagine optimizing some objective function combining “awful” and “boring,” so that the awful narrative choices can’t be quite outrageous enough to be non-boring, and the boring choices can’t be quite conventional enough to be merely mediocre rather than awful.  That’s what happens

I actually tried a couple years back but got bored not too far into it. How long should I go before I give up?

Make sure to read at least 100 pages; if you finish Act 2 and don’t find it at least a little interesting/fun, probably stop; if you finish Act 3 and still don’t like it, definitely stop

(FWIW, most of the “famous” / socially illuminating stuff is in Acts 5 and 6)

(via prospitianescapee)

“Dave” the self-insert talking to Cerebus feels a lot like Andrew Hussie the self-insert talking to Caliborn

It is a blessing that we have not experienced the Hussie equivalent of “Viktor Davis” … although I don’t want to jinx it, now that I think about it

“Ansrew Hussnasty took a drag from his cigarette and expelled a series of small smoke rings. The bright-eyed fellow and Ansrew Hussnasty stared into each other’s eyes for a period of several seconds. One corner of the bright-eyed fellow’s smile twitched slightly and the merest trace of anxiety crossed his features. The slim, young woman widely adored work of pop fiction took a deep bite from the wound. He closed his eyes and the smile broadened. ‘You’ll see,’ he said, leaning towards her it. ‘You’ll see.’ “

ihfsttinuf asked: I did send a few about the Gamergate/Zoe Quinn thing but I also sent you some rather ranty messages about my opinions on the significance of Caliborn and Calliope in Act 6 of Homestuck that I think were a bit more confrontational, I think.

I’ve totally forgotten those, so they can’t have been that bad.  (At least, they were not consciously in mind when I was talking about “HH asks”)

(I have such a hard time caring about Homestuck these days that it’s hard to remember all of the arguments I’ve had about it.  I had a lot, back in the day)

just what we need right now: more vriscourse

Yeah, this sort of thing – and also some of her relationships w/ other characters follow an “I am hot and dangerous and exciting and will make your everyperson life less mundane” script that is very paranormal romance-like.  (At least, it seems like that given my very limited knowledge of paranormal romance.)

Wait, aren’t the paranormal romance tropes even explicitly acknowledged in canon? With Vriska getting her model/tricks from Mindfang’s book, and the first excerpt we read from it being a lascivious romance scene?

Good point!
