john egbert died for our sins
I should finish reading The Serenity Serendipity* Gospels sometime, because the little I read of it felt like a certain aspect of Homestuck I liked had been unexpectedly expanded upon at great length
*(thanks spork)
Someone on the MSPA Forums once told me that he thought Homestuck fans had a bad reputation in part because they tended to sound like stereotypical hippies talking about psychedelic drugs: “you can’t describe Homestuck, you just have to experience it, just read it, it’ll change your life, man”
But you know, speaking as someone who has both done LSD and read Homestuck, I can confirm that these are in fact approximately the same experience
(The “joke” here, I guess, is that the preceding statement sounds like a cliched and imprecise way of saying Homestuck is weird or whatever, but actually I mean it in all its specifics. Dazzling colorful visuals [flashes]; sense of steadily building weirdness and complexity from humble beginnings; sense of being immersed in a web of complicated details, none of which feels small enough to ignore; tragicomic uncertainty of tone / mood whiplash; obsession with closed loops / repetition / patterns / meta-levels / connections between seemingly disparate things; everything seems both hilarious and “deep” and the line between the two is blurry; sense of everything “going too far / going beyond the limits of [taste/comprehensibility/etc.]”; interest in wordplay, especially portmanteaus and other “distortions” of ordinary words; deja vu / everything reminds you of everything else; one comes out on the other end with a dazed “what the fuck did I just read/experience?” feeling; etc. Homestuck is more like psychedlic drugs than most “psychedelic art,” IMO/IME)
the takeaway im getting here is that taking psychedelic drugs makes you ramble on about the experience of taking psychedelic drugs afterward. don’t do drugs kids. which… is also like homestuck actually
This is all 100% true
They are both things that make you want to talk about them at length afterwards in a way that can be very tiresome to people who don’t have the context or are otherwise not interested
Let Me Tell You About [etc.]
Andrew Hussie has messed with my head before in many ways, but this is the first time he’s made me think for a moment that there were actual bugs crawling on my screen.
(I wonder if this is the intended effect, or if it’s just a side effect of “the fireflies should break the screen for thematic reasons” + “the fireflies are fireflies”?)
I’ve never thought this before but at least in this update, Roxy kind of reminds me of S.
Like the whole denizen conversation sounds like a conversation S. and I would have, with me (John) asking questions in kind of a deadpan, casual way and him (Roxy) responding with enthusiastic descriptions that mix several conversational registers (“fuck yes, was downright incomprehensible in the most mysteriously understandable way” / "like what my options were and what would happen if i did the options and like the metaphysical and moral consequences of doing those options")
Also I feel like the writing quality has been unusually high in the last few updates, which would be thematically appropriate (no more glitches). If it’s on purpose that would be … well, Husssssie

And this is why I rely on the tried and true “bother them until they knuckle under” strategy for Homestuck evangelism. In my defense, those I make a point to bother consistently have all turned into rabid Homestuck fans.
I was about to say “at least the effects of getting into Homestuck are relatively circumscribed, unlike the effects of getting into psychedelic drugs, which can include joining a weird subculture with its own style of dress and its own special social events and stuff” and then I was like oh wait

Literally the reason I don’t do drugs is because having been the Sober Friend for many years I know exactly how annoying that is
Because I feel like running this joke into the ground:

Jono joins us for the second time to discuss Homestuck. It’s an episode all about Homestuck. We talk about Homestuck in this one: the ins and outs, ups and downs, top and bottom. It’s a Homestuck episode, so come listen if you wanna hear us say things about Homestuck.
Hear Josh, Jono and I discuss the only thing that ever mattered
I’m going to listen the fuck out of this once I have an opportunity
