This week in People Magazine:

“Andrew Hamilton. My name is…Andrew Hamilton. And there’s a million things I haven’t done”

Good thing there wasn’t an entire song dedicated to what’s his name, or else this would be super embarrassing.

But damn, it’s getting dark, so let me spell out the name

That’s an order from your commandrew.”

Pop score.

oh no

Maybe sometimes random magazine clippings just float in from parallel universes and we explain them by assuming journalists are fools.

Also I cannot believe that Lin-Manuel Miranda passed up the opportunity to include the part where Hamilton’s enemies went at him by publishing a series of “stories” about the highly-allegorical adventures of a “character” named Tom Shit.

(It was spelled S**t, but then as now everybody knew what that stood for).

TOM SHIT

Not that anyone wanted to know, but I have no quarrels with the political Hamilton hate posts I see going around.  I mean, some of them are stupid (that one about “white gays” for instance), but I can understand why Hamilton would seem messed up to anyone with sufficient distaste for the founding fathers.

Like, it would be disturbing if some more universally reviled group of historical figures became celebrated as cute characters to share anecdotes about on tumblr.  And “the founding fathers should be reviled” is an opinion I respect, even if I don’t agree with it, so …

If you aren’t doing something where music with words will be distracting, Act 1 of Hamilton is great work music

If a bastard, orphan (etc.) could grow up to be (etc.) then I can definitely do the trivial task of the moment

Dumb question but when everyone talks about “Hamilton” as this ubiquitously shared cultural thing, through what medium have they experienced it? Like, unless you live in NYC you can’t just go watch the musical. I imagine there’s some way you can vicariously watch the musical through some low-res medium but this seems unlikely to be anywhere satisfying as seeing it live and also likely to heavily diminish the extent to which you enjoy doing so if you ever get the chance (although this might be a bias of mine - many people enjoying watching the same movies or reading the same books over and over but I very rarely do this).

I’m pretty sure that everyone (besides @peopleneedaplacetogo and other privileged bastards :) ) is just listening to the soundtrack, which can be freely and legally listened to on youtube and encompasses the entire audio component of the musical, aside from one brief and non-essential “bonus” scene.

Yeah, the soundtrack is professionally produced (i.e. not a bootleg or “low-res”) and since it’s a sung-through musical, you get the entire plot that way.

Obviously you’re missing the visual aspect of the experience, but then with a play your experience is going to vary anyway (what about people who see a musical performed by a not-very-good ensemble?  have they “really seen it”?) so as “possible experiences of the play that people will have” go I think the soundtrack-only one should at least qualify as “pretty good”

I am listening to Hamilton right now. About halfway through.

I don’t really like it. It’s okay background music, but nothing I would seek out. The only song I’m really digging is “My Shot”.

Gave it a try, at least! I am still trash of many things.

I too found My Shot the most listenable, although I haven’t heard all the others

watching the effect this musical has on people is more puzzling than anything else tbh

I hope this doesn’t come off as saying “you just weren’t paying enough attention to appreciate its brilliance” (which is not what I want to say), but personally I enjoyed it much more when I finally sat down and listened to it with no distractions rather than listening to it in the background.  (That may be what you guys are doing, I’m just wondering on the basis of OP’s mention of “background music”)

It’s much more distinctive on the level of characterization and wordplay/meter/rhyme than on the level of melody or harmony; it’s much better as a play than it is as background music, if that makes sense.

Yesterday Esther finished listening to Hamilton with me, and I’m sure you all will be really surprised to learn that I thought it was great

Anyway, it’s not a very deep connection, but I can’t listen to this song without thinking of Paul from TNC
