mensa is like the high IQ equivalent of new money

garishly going about flaunting it while all the old money cringes and goes “well, they’re just not our type, Harold”

 Says the self-identified rationalist!

I really need to finish up my application.  I don’t think that I’m better than anyone for qualifying for mensa or whatever, but most people IRL just have glazed eyes when I try to talk to them about stuff that’s important to me.  IQ isn’t a bad proxy for that, and anyway, the more social clubs and such that exist, the bttter.  I’d rather meet up with the rationalists, but there isn’t one local here, so it’s the next best thing.

Rationalists are often very “old-money”, though. We’re really into fine wine, Old Master paintings, and so on.

Now, we certainly don’t think there’s any shame in having money! But we try not to flaunt it; we just like to gather to discuss our interests and oh, did you see the Vermeer over the mantle, isn’t it nice?

(The blue-eyes story is an important sociological metaphor, not just a silly logic puzzle. The pile of gold bricks in my living room is actually a fascinating work of contemporary art…)

On the other hand, by this analogy Eliezer is basically Kanye West.

#it works on a number of levels actually #I sincerely like kanye’s work but I wouldn’t invite him to give a speech #unless I was running a producers-style scam #same for EY
