Have you read either Christian’s “Maps of Time” or Graeber’s “Debt: The First Five Thousand Years”? If not, they might scratch that itch.
Haven’t read either, both both are on my list. My father liked Maps of Time and bought me a Kindle copy as a Christmas present, and Debt has always sounded really interesting.
