Spelling in green-world is different from spelling in purple-world, according to Google Docs (???)

That probably tells you more about how Aristotle wrote than reading Aristotle would.

I was kinda excited by Quillette when I first heard about it but every time I go there I’m really disappointed.

Quillete, Jacobite, Status 451, all the quasi-libertarian magazines that form in response to the intellectual desert in progressive writing outlets, just turn out to be really, really bad. They’re even more resentful, petty, repetitive, vengeful, and free of critical thinking than the Voxes and Jacobins they seek to attack.

I respect much of the writing of their individual authors, so I conclude the demands of marketing and keeping an institutional website up, just water down any quality into the lowest common denominator.

Yeah, my mental model of how these websites (and Vox and Jacobin for that matter) work is that a writer produces a lot of low effort stuff in order to draw in consistent traffic, which in turn subsidizes their larger and higher quality projects that take months to produce.

Honestly, this is the best argument I know for Buzzfeed.

They offset their high quality work with actual clickbait junk, so they don’t have to put a facade of “this is all equally high-standards journalism” like Vox or “this is all deep moral thought” like Quillette. It’s just “Which Game of Thrones character are you?” sitting next to “We interviewed a Syrian rebel leader, here’s the transcript.” I guess Vice sometimes pulls off the same deal, but Buzzfeed has hired traditional reporters so there’s less of the gonzo sloppiness that Vice trades in.

Now if only Buzzfeed would stop blurring their quality journalism with the occasional bit of unresearched libel like that one piece on Matt Inman…

Even people without deep connections to the poultry world want her diapers so they can take their chickens indoors (and post stylish photos on Instagram).
