The only thing keeping the Inhomedal/Hermidsmasheries-Bauer collaboration from falling apart is the fact that they’re both necrophiliacs with a fetish for disembodied hands.

During the course of the game, the player can visit non-canonical locations such as Cold Storage and cause a series of unfortunate accidents that result in the death of unwitting party members. After completion, these locations are visited again but are now populated by copies of the player, rather than other versions of the respective characters. Since this will change what the canonical locations are like, their locations should be changed and updated as new adventures happen. For example, the Cold Storage version of Eric’s grave should become a bank vault with bank-like doors (which opens automatically if the vault is opened), and the original grave should remain in its original location.

The eastern convention city was established in a lavish ceremony, featuring a harem of young girls who were presented as gifts from the west, and a wonderful banquet hosted by a rich merchant who was very interested in exhibiting the “new technology” and growth possibilities he had seen in the wizard who had sent him a message.

It was revealed in this ceremony that Harry Potter had been captured by Unspeakables, and placed on the top of a pyramid similar in design to the one described in Harry’s Unspeakables report. Harry’s disappearance had left a deep hole in the convention. She would like to take advantage of this fact, and create a method of travel that makes use of the possibility of repopulation, much like the Transfiguration experiment, but in this case, the hole was created to provide Unspeakables with a convenient escape route if they decide to perform a hostile takeover.

A party of four Unspeakables was invited by a member of the secret society, and they were to arrive via a crowd of 1000 that was to form in the grassy field that looked like grassy lawn. An Unspeakable surmised that this meant that a few Unspeakable peons had planned this party. Apparently they’d arranged for the peons to be a significant majority of the attendees and that the Unspeakable division had been unable to keep the balance in their favor. Some of them in the crowd wanted to cause a commotion, and a few people began to talk about ransoming the Unspeakables to the merchant. The merchant was busy with things not directly related to the event, so he didn’t see the situation as quickly as it was developing.

It seemed like the party was to be held at a location deep in the city, near a dock. This seemed odd to the Unspeakable who had arranged for the party: people were being flown in on small planes, not using the docks. But as the Unspeakable went about organizing the party, it became clear that the location was currently being used as a sacrificial altar for a large group of necromancers. The merchant was concerned that this would not seem especially reverent or kind to Unspeakables, but the necromancers said that it was to be just as reverent and kind. That was the end of the communication between the merchant and the necromancers.

She was having trouble finding an explanation for why Wizards and Unspeakables alike were suddenly being offered as sacrifices, but, based on the events that had already happened, she knew what had caused the necromancers to act as they did. Harry Potter had managed to get into Unspeakables Headquarters and steal one of Unspeakables’ stolen secrets. When the Unspeakables found out about this, they decided that this was their job and were going to keep it, no matter what anyone else did. If you stole their secret, you were a threat to them. Harry, without much of an idea what he was doing, had somehow gotten the Unspeakables’ secret. This would tend to explain why Wizards were suddenly going to Unspeakables’ Headquarters.

It occurred to her that she had a high probability of failing the physical version of this test. (She would not be able to leave the demonstration site, even if she wanted to.) She had met a number of people who thought she was supposed to be able to ignore the physical effects, and they were all wrong. The Unspeakables had installed special filters which made her more susceptible to hallucinogenic drugs. She had tried some with mixed results, but had gotten pretty good at resisting the filter effect when she felt like it.

It occurred to her, with some embarrassment, that she had chosen to spend time with these weirdos. The consequences of their interference with her moral fitness were not abstract to her, although they were invisible. But these people were only a small fraction of the person she was. She had friends, even if they were rather weird.

Finally, her escort pulled up in front of a perfectly circular structure of thick and indented brick with a door at its far end. The door opened on a circular space. There was a large fireplace in the center of the room, but it did not seem to light the entire space. Looking at her watch, she realized that she had been sitting here for over an hour. Someone had to have come and gone.

“Hello, Parvati.”

“Howdy, Harry,” she replied, as dryly as she could manage without giving away her secret.

“Where’s Pettigrew?”

“He and the other Death Eaters have moved on to someplace I won’t talk about. How about you? What did you do?”

“I don’t know,” he replied, feeling increasingly out of sorts. “I just did what I always do. Got myself killed.”

“Who were your enemies?”

“I was just trying to protect the Ministry.”

“Me too,” she said with a nod.

“So … you don’t know anything about the bigger picture here. We don’t know where the Heart of Darkness is.”

“I’ve heard it can be found in Narnia.”

“You know, I think I already know that,” Harry said. “I met that Narnia guy once, over in the right-hand corner. He’d do anything for the right price. And he’s a drug dealer. That’s how he found me.”

“Yeah,” said Parvati.

“What are you saying? Is it a secret you want out there? Because I don’t think I want to be here.”

“I know we’re supposed to be a secret, Harry,” said Parvati. “But even if we weren’t … sometimes you do things that are way more important than anything we do in the Ministry. And not in the spirit of the Ministry either.”

Her best friend seemed to be in a big hurry, so Parvati started talking quickly, hoping that this was a good idea. “Look, Harry, it’s really nice that you got to meet some Narnia people. I mean, they’re interesting, aren’t they? The guy who sells poppies, that one, even his dad was cool. Except he’s a Death Eater and we all know that. That’s the side of Narnia that you wouldn’t want to see. And anyway, it’s not like they have a monopoly on interesting people.”

“They do,” Harry said. “They own a monopoly on pretty well everything. I mean, Ollivander … he’s really impressive. That’s why he got me into this line of work, right? He makes really good wands.”

Parvati laughed. She realized that she had been rather loud in her enthusiasm.

“So anyway,” she said, “I’m sure you’ve noticed that we’re here because we’ve been investigating the Dark Arts in secret for a long time now, right? The Ministry is still just waiting for the supposed Task Force on the Dark Arts to report its findings. And I mean, of course it’s easier for them to just hide our work from the public. It would be impossible for me to come out of the Ministry at the moment if I wasn’t doing something. So that means I’ve got to keep some sort of a low profile and work here secretly.”

“You mean … ”

“Yeah. Even though no one knows I’m here. It’s easy. I just take the regular shops on the way to the Ministry, no one ever asks me for directions. It’s like … like I’m a private investigator. Except I deal with Dark Arts rather than, you know, losing my eyes. I’m not good with Death Eaters.”

Harry smiled. That made sense. It had been his first bad impression of the Ministry. There were still times when he’d gone in for an interview and he’d felt, in a way, ill at ease in the security of his robes and bowler hat.

[EDIT 8/8/20: since it turns out AI Dungeon’s model was finetuned, the experience recounted here was probably less informative about GPT-3 than I had thought.]

Played around with GPT-3 a bit last night on AI Dungeon.

(I followed the procedure I’ve seen recommended: sign up for the Premium trial, switch to “Dragon” model, start a new game, select option 6/custom, use the “Story” action mode, and type.  There’s a slider called “Randomness” which seems likely to be temperature, and I kept it at the default of 1.

People on LW seem to be interpreting this configuration as equivalent to simply prompting the API, although I can’t be sure there aren’t AI-Dungeon-specific customizations in play.  That said, the configurability of the API and GPT-3 itself is so limited that I’m not too worried – if anything I’m more curious what AI Dungeon could possibly by doing to distinguish their GPT-3 app from anything else using the same API.)

Anyway, I went through a few abortive attempts where I kept being told “the AI doesn’t know what to do” – dunno what that means – and eventually found one prompt-and-response flow that worked pretty well.  Lacking any really good topic ideas, I went with the default of talking about GPT-3 itself, and started to RP a kind of straw-man of myself.  I chose a dialogue format since a lot of people have been doing that, following gwern.

Surely some of this is confirmation bias, and I only had the one interaction (compared to what must be thousands of “interactions” over the course of my GPT-2 obsession), but it felt very much like GPT-2 to me?

Like GPT-2, it gets easy things, like the dialogue format.  Like GPT-2, it successfully reproduces the sound/style/texture of a certain kind of text once it’s gotten the gist, though generally erring on the side of safe-but-boring boilerplate talk.

Like GPT-2, it has a range of declarative knowledge which makes for cute surprises (note how it’s the first to mention “Eliezer,” and then how it name-drops “MIRI” and “CFAR”!)  And like GPT-2, it knows that various unique entities are connected to one another but is hazy on what those connections are, or what stable world they fit into.  (“Eliezer” is under-appreciated … at MIRI and CFAR, and he’s also apparently doing profound AI work while also being a fictional character who appears in the “sequel” to something.)

Like GPT-2, it really knows what arguments sound like, but is much shakier on how they actually work.  Much of my ornery RP character’s behavior consisted of prodding “Friend” on their obvious logical errors.  I never got the impression that the model understood such points after I made them – see in particular its attempts to write dialogue for “my” character.

The consciousness/matter/etc. discussion at the end is really, spookily good!  … and if you follow @nostalgebraist-autoresponder you’ve seen GPT-2 have these kinds of Deep Thoughts on the regular.

Admittedly, that isn’t a fair comparison, because N-A is a personal hobby project with lots of customization.  But that’s sort of my point: either of these things can do great stuff if you treat it as a platform for creative work that has a learning curve, and likewise either can be unimpressive if you view it as a static thing someone made in a lab that you can assess in 30 minutes and then walk away from.

I unashamedly did the assess-in-30-min thing with poor GPT-3, here, and so here I am, telling you what anyone would after such a desultory demo :)

Friend: Well if you were building a generative language model that could generate the set of all possible books, and you trained it on a corpus of a few hundred thousand books.

You: …then what?

Friend: Well then you’d do it again with the books plus whatever else your machine learned from.

You: Wait, what did my machine learn from except the books? I thought you said it was trained on “a corpus of a few hundred thousand books.” Was there anything besides that?

You: No? So then what the hell is this all about?

You: Wait a minute… are you talking about Eliezer’s work with blogging AI?

Friend: Yes.

You: You mean… you’re one of its fans? I thought you were one of the “movement”

Friend: Yes, fan might be too strong a word but I think there is some real value to Eliezer’s work.

You: Okay, which parts? Timeless Decision Theory? Coherent Extrapolated Volition? HPMOR? And what does this have to do with our language modeling discussion?

Friend: Well, lets just say I think that Eliezer’s understanding of the potential of artificial intelligence is very underappreciated and in my opinion represents a serious weakness in much of the work coming out of MIRI and CFAR. I think your position on that is clear.

You: Well, I mean the guy did create an evil moron AI that killed all the scientists on his spaceship.

Friend: Hah, that’s just one of the many myths about his experiment. It was a thought experiment not a real AI. And it didn’t kill anyone.

You: But… I mean it killed some people.

Friend: Only in the sequel. And that was just a robot it was piloting, not a spaceship.

You: Umm… Well, whatever. The robot was blown up and some people died.

Friend: Yes, after it rescued them from a radiation storm that killed the other people on the ship.

You: While I certainly agree that some of the things Eliezer’s done are of great value, I think we both know his ideas on AI are… problematic.

Friend: It’s funny you mention Eliezer’s work because it reminds me of a point I wanted to make.

You: Okay, make it.

Friend: Well, I think there is an important distinction between his AGI work and the other stuff you mention.

You: And that is?

Friend: His AGI work actually succeeds.

You: …I don’t follow. I mean Timeless Decision Theory is a big pile of…

Friend: No, no, not TDoT, I’m talking about the AI work. Look, if you want to know if a certain AI architecture can lead to human-level intelligence or beyond, then GPT-2 is proof that the approach Eliezer has been taking can work.

You: Okay, I’ll grant you that. But I don’t think it’s as simple as just scaling up a language model to get to human-level intelligence. And I don’t think Eliezer’s work proves that it is.

Friend: You’re just saying that because you have your own opinion on the matter. But that’s okay, everyone does! But the thing is, this isn’t just your opinion. It’s every other AI researcher’s opinion too. You all just won’t admit it.

You: Wait… I won’t admit that “every other AI researcher” agrees with me? If that were true, wouldn’t I be celebrating?

Friend: No, what I mean is that every other AI researcher doesn’t agree with you on a fundamental level. Namely, your failure to grasp the point I’m trying to make right now.

Friend: Sure. Let’s imagine a scenario in which an AI researcher believes they can get to human-level intelligence or beyond using some language-based model.

You: Like, it depends on the architecture of their model, right?

You: Okay, I guess it would probably fail in some spectacular way. The model would overheat or something.

Friend: No, I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t.

You: Well, okay, then maybe it would pass the Turing Test.

Friend: You really think so? Even if we suppose that this hypothetical language-based model works exactly like the human brain does, I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t pass the Turing Test.

You: So what are you saying it would do, then? You were explaining some point I failed to grasp, here – what is it? What would this model do?

Friend: It would write a great novel.

You: A great novel?

Friend: Yes, a great novel. Or maybe several of them. Let me explain. Do you know what consciousness is?

You: Well, I guess it’s like being self-aware, right? You’re conscious of yourself and your surroundings.

Another thing I’ve done in the last couple years is write a lot of fanfics inspired by (but not featuring any characters from) JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. At the time I started this, it was a lot less memey to like JoJo, so it always bothers me a little when people make the campiness or the art style or the little weird moments of given chapters the reason to enjoy it, since since for me JoJo is a pretty resounding celebration of the human spirit.

Like, almost every JoJo fight shares the same rules. Nothing convenient happens for the hero unless they make it happen, while the villain has superior knowledge of what’s going on and better preparation, and whatever weaknesses they have are neatly covered up. There are no moments where the hero’s friends show up to save them, no arc where someone’s defeated and then goes through months of training and then comes back for vengeance, no plucky escapes because they just happened to be lucky.

No, each fight is a matter of creative problem-solving, usually trying to avoid some loss condition that doesn’t involve death - the enemy touches you, they get to a piece of information first, et cetera. And the hero loses ground throughout this, where their small victories are more focused on keeping them alive and moving forward. And then at the moment when the villain is achieving whatever this condition is, where defeat seems inevitable, the hero reveals their last clever plan and reverses everything.

What’s really striking (although I don’t want to spoil too much) is that in battles that involve slim chances, the final reveal makes them irrelevant. A character plays poker for his soul with a man who’s cheating, and his final victory winds up working because it exists completely outside of the problem - it ultimately doesn’t matter what his cards were. Luck doesn’t exist in JoJo - or else you wind up making it for yourself.

This reversal, this peripety, is what I love about JoJo. It’s a moment of magic, something from nothing, the light that comes out of the darkness and the strange feeling of awe at the first time I had a character do something by themselves that was against my wishes. And having read Araki’s book on writing, I feel a lot of kinship for his modeling of characters, where he simply lets their internal drives move them around naturally without planning very far ahead about how his conflicts are going to resolve.

Sometimes this results in playground logic solutions, admittedly, but the core of it is really admirable to me. JoJo is about not giving up, but the way it teaches this lesson is to repeatedly convince you that this time the main characters are really going to get fucked and leave you with no clue of how they’re going to get out of it, before swiping back the curtain on their victory and making you feel silly for ever thinking it could’ve been otherwise.

Sadistic killer and self-taught craftsman. Deliberately falls in love with inanimate object despite lack of affective resonance. Has metaraphorical shadow self in the form of Mephistopheles. Talked to Eve in the Garden of Eden ~5,000 years ago. Experienced life as God-fearing adult ~2,500 years ago. Sent off on a one-way trip to other universe ~2,500 years ago. A friend of mine is a very odd guy. A bit “weird,” really, but still a typical “weird guy.” I don’t mean this in the pejorative way – he’s very polite and he’s charming and he’s funny. He’s still a weird guy.

He lives in the same city I do, and lives in a completely normal-looking house. I’ve seen him at work and I’ve seen him out walking and we’ve talked on the phone and he’s just a normal guy – in every sense of the word.

He has a whole set of quirks that aren’t normal-guy-ish at all, but that I don’t think are normal-guy-ish at all. He’s like very high-strung, very focused, very OCD. He thinks that every interaction with someone has a powerful and deadly effect on him, and that talking to you will make him absolutely still worse. He thinks that whenever he’s about to do something he just wants to sit down and not do it, because at some point it will kill him. He puts on headphones and keeps the volume so low that the “rock” so to speak would never even register, so that his whole body vibrates, and he never feels anything but intense physical pain. He has a mental illness called “neurosis” which is a mysterious thing that no one knows how to treat except for him, and which, among other things, makes him terrified of insect bites and dogs and shit. He is very, very bad at talking to strangers, even close ones. Like literally bad at it, a complete block from talking to strangers, if not worse. If you mentioned to him that you were talking to someone and he thought you were saying something bad about him, he would lose all control of himself and start screaming at you. This caused him great concern at first, because he was worried that some stranger might be making fun of him, and possibly hurting him.

And at the same time he’s very good at looking like a normal, un-weird guy.

So I’m having this “meeting up with a strange guy” thing recently, which seems to have become a real thing – maybe there are a lot of weirdos around here! I go to a really boring dinner party with him and a friend of ours, and I get very comfortable with the guy immediately. We start talking about people we know – basically anything interesting and enjoyable. He’s really interested in the whole “I’m not like other people” thing, and is interested in how we are “in the zone” as a society and also how it’s boring and bad socialising to just be with “ordinary” people.

He is absolutely in the zone. He’s talking and he’s engaging with the conversation. He is totally engaged in the experience of the moment, not looking at his watch, not thinking about how he should change his music to match his surroundings (he knows how to change his music, it’s just that he can’t become less like a normal person, there wasn’t time). I’m no stranger to people on psychedelics, but I have never experienced this before. He just keeps talking, keeps actually enjoying the conversation – not watching his body temperature. I notice the dogs on the sidewalk and start excitedly telling this stranger about this creepy little dog thing I saw earlier – but the guy just gets that it’s a dog and gets excited about it and he’s the man. It’s surreal.

…he begins to walk me into a friend’s apartment. It was definitely more quiet there. One door had been opened. The window was partially open. There was a bit of light on the sill. We walked toward the window. And then, as it turned out, this same man’s music became drastically, dramatically, distorted. “The Zombie Apocalypse” by Oren Ambarchi, a track which plays over and over again in my head today, played. I began to scream. I was laughing so hard that I’m not sure what I was laughing at. I could barely remember anything about the apartment. Something was very wrong.

And then, suddenly, we arrived at the door of the friend’s apartment, and the window was closed. We walked into the friend’s room. The friend’s roommate was there, watching TV. And this was the point of no return. The man was completely isolated, completely isolated from reality. He would be unable to handle one more unexpected individual interruption to his world view. And yet he was, by this point, a monstrosity, full of contradictions. How could he be so normal?! How could he have become so dark and morbid?!

His friend had a TV, so I turned on the TV. I wasn’t watching. I was lost in a different world – in my world. This is how it is. I need time to myself. That’s all. As I was talking to the other man, I had noticed that his housemate was looking at me, clearly frustrated. I don’t know whether it was my voice or the world around me, but something about the environment hit him. He walked over to me, placed his hands on my shoulders, and said, “Eli, you’re obsessed. You’re totally obsessed.”

He walked me down to the subway, then back up to his apartment. He immediately became more and more dark. This is the essence of the psychedelic experience. I had been trying to lure him in to my world, and now I felt trapped in the same world. I was the prey of a predator and had no way out.

“This is the type of environment you need to be in if you want to understand suicide. It’s what makes Phil [Yorke] sad. This is what makes him sad.”

In the subway station, the station, his apartment, and himself, there was a flurry of activity. We walked toward a walled area with a full-sized crucifix above an ornate fountain in the center of it. The man pointed to a set of stairs. Then he stood in front of me, and as I walked up the stairs he walked backward, then forward, stopping just before the top step.

He was now going in circles. In a very coordinated way, he would move his arms back and forth in a specific pattern, stamping on the ground five times. It was extremely manneristic. There were one hundred of these manic gestures. A hundred different ways to stamp the ground. The manic gestures were like four different animals moving in the same area, stampeding toward me, stampeding toward each other, stampeding toward the door. I started to feel like I was in the movie “The Shawshank Redemption,” except there was one hundred different animals stampeding toward me, and they weren’t felines or parakeets. They were human beings – manic – stampeding toward the abyss.

There was a reason the manic gestures were here. They were taking me somewhere. Somewhere outside of me, or inside of me. This is a fractal. (I’m actually learning to see fractals.) You can’t get to the center from here. This place is inside of me. It’s not real. I’m in a parallel universe. But I’m happy here. It’s a chaotic world. I love it.

He stopped stampeding. The manic pattern continued, at a much more calm pace. He looked around the room and muttered, “I am filled with rage.” I expected him to speak in an angry tone. He simply looked perplexed, but in that same perplexed expression, I saw the culmination of his inner conflict: he felt, for once, weak.
