I am home from the hospital. Things are much clearer now. In fact, I think I can now write again.

Why I’m asking:

I recently made a relatively large change to one of Frank’s components.

I’ve formed my own subjective impressions of the results, but I’m not an unbiased judge, because I had pre-conceived notions about the type of impact it would have and the magnitude of that impact.

I’m planning to talk about the change on my blog, but first I want to get a vibe check from Frank’s audience.  Like, yeah, this change may be really “cool” on a technical level, but is it even perceptible to the end user?  If there is a perceptible impact, is it in the right direction?

Rothbard

Once upon a time there was a Rothbard, and he thought that the “Mises Institute” was a good thing. But then he looked at it and saw that it was full of stupid people, and they were making real idiots of themselves, and there was no way to make him think again. This is what it means to be a human being once upon a time.

Talk about “AI” in the press these days tends to conflate two things:

  1. Machine intelligence in general, a category that includes e.g. hypothetical super-intelligent machines, hypothetical machines based on technologies not yet invented, and robots from science fiction
  2. A specific bundle of technologies which has gotten a lot of hype and investment in the past 5-10 years

#1 is the subject of a rich vein of discussion and speculation going back decades.  Turing, Asimov, et. al. did just fine speculating about AI without needing to know about the thing that industry hype currently calls “AI.”

You don’t need to know what a “convolutional neural network” is to worry about what would happen if a machine were smarter than you.

Because I work on #2 professionally, I get a lot of spam emails and targeted ads that say things like “Accelerate your AI development cycle with ProductName” or “ProductName: scalable AI solutions.”

The word “AI” in these ads has a recognizable meaning, and it is not the same meaning used in the sentence “Elon Musk founded OpenAI because he was worried AI might cause human extinction.”

Because the press conflates these things, the average person tends to do so, too.  It’s common even among people who make consequential decisions involving “AI,” like politicians, executives, and economists.

I usually feel like I’m being pedantic about this, but I’m starting to think it’s a real problem.

The conflation encourages people to imagine #2 preceding #1 in time, as though “AI” were some specific thing discovered in a research lab in like 2002, whose properties were later extrapolated to scary hypotheticals.

It’s understandable that AI research companies would make this conflation.  It’s a great marketing trick, if you can pull it off, to convince the public that when they encounter speculation about arbitrarily powerful future technologies, it’s really about the concrete thing your company does right now.

It might be okay for the public to believe this story willingly, but they seem to have bought it (via the press) without realizing what was happening.  They don’t know they’re letting someone else draw the lines inside their heads.  They may learn all sorts of facts about the region in their mental map labeled “AI,” but they don’t attach them to the right nouns, even if each fact is true of some noun.

I feel like a lot of the talk about the recent escalation in tensions between the US and North Korea has involved people who have very little understanding of how the US government actually operates or what it would take to “talk” to Kim Jong Un.

Like a great deal of what I hear from people on the left who are sympathetic to the North Korean cause, it sounds to me like they have this idealized picture in their minds of some sort of idealized world in which North Korea and the US would be friendly in an anarchic balance of power utopia where Kim is just like “heyyy I’m cool and you, you’re cool, and we don’t have a lot of enemies” and everything would be great and I’m just like “yeah I like your music”

adam and coordinate dependence

For neural nets, I grudgingly use the Adam optimizer like everyone else.

It’s widely available and commonly used, and clearly works better in practice than any other optimizer with those properties.  “No one ever got fired for choosing Adam,” so to speak.

But its lack of coordinate independence really bothers me.  You write your model down in some arbitrary set of coordinates, and then Adam (effectively) approximates your function as locally quadratic, with your coordinates as the principal axes.

It doesn’t compute any estimate of how good or bad this approximation is, it just adopts it and sticks with it.

This is particularly weird when you’re just writing down matrices and initializing them with a coordinate independent distribution.  The arbitrary basis I use to keep track of these matrices in my computer’s memory has no role in the mathematical problem, but it affects the optimizer!

Perhaps this problem is not so bad with neural nets, because they tend to contain frequent coordinate-wise operations (activation functions).  This tends to “snap things into place,” aligning the otherwise arbitrary basis used for computer memory with the non-arbitrary basis picked out by the coordinate-wise operations.  Thus the Hessian has a reason to become “axis-aligned,“ cf. this useful paper.

And where there isn’t a functional role for a coordinate-wise operation, people often add one anyway to “help optimization” (batch norm, layer norm).  This is often discussed as “whitening” (making outputs more like white noise), but it’s clearer in my head if I think about it as trying to snap all the remaining arbitrary vector bases in the problem into alignment with the existing preferred bases.

However, in modern architectures, there some are places that neither have an activation nor an artificially imposed whitening step.

In one part of the transformer, you take a vector v and multiply it by a matrix Q to form the “queries,” and also by a matrix K to form the “keys.”  The output depends only on the dot product of Q*v and K*v, which is coordinate independent.  So nothing in the problem cares about your basis for expressing Q and K in computer memory, but Adam still cares.

(Going back to the reasons for axis-alignment – it’s also possible that when you start with coordinate invariant random matrices, but then optimize with Adam, the updates will push your parameters into a region where the Hessian is axis-aligned along your arbitrary axes.  I don’t know why this would be true, if it were true, but it seems possible.

This would be like picking a random vector at initialization, and then only exploring a subset of the solution space, where the subset is somehow parameterized by the vector.)

Maybe someday I’ll switch to natural gradients just so I can sleep better at night …

Chapter 2

The Mechanic

The place was wide and silent. The long curved table on which Jesus sat, split by a partial stack of books into two hemispheres, was immaculately clean, as if it had never seen a human being. A lamp on one of the Ionic columns above the table cast a slanting, unnaturally bright beam into every nook and cranny of every room.

Mary’s head swiveled to look at Jesus. She had a face full of patiently made-up, slightly squinting brows and an expression of marvellous patience. She raised a hand and brushed her lips by way of preamble. “So, what are we doing about the ball now, huh?”

“The ball.”

“Oh yeah, of course, the ball. And who’s against it? We all gotta play together.”

“The ball has now been moved,” Jesus explained leisurely. “It is in the remote location corresponding to room #114, which James locked with an electronic portal his ancestor Moses invented.”

“Ah,” Mary said. “So the ball is still there, then. What is he going to do with it?”

“I will leave that question for you and your husband.”

Mary looked at Jesus, who continued to hold his hands behind his head, as though amused with the subject. Mary’s hands did the same. Those gloved, metallic hands looked like they contained a many-faceted socket or two.

“Well, you just made a pretty good impression of me,” Jesus said thoughtfully. “Better than any of our others.”

“You could have just been making a good impression, Jesus.” Jesus bit his tongue and shook his head, a gesture of deep cultural shame. “But I didn’t think you would go off and signal me just like that.”

“I’m not signaling. I’m having an honest-to-god conversation with the creator of this world, to whom I owe all my intel­lectual edu­cation. It’s no sin to play along and ascertain the creator’s location. I have bugged him out of sheer courtesy.”

“Mary, why are you talking to Moses?”

Mary began to pace theatrically. This gave Jesus no chance to voice a question. The ball-mover, whose head was aglow with a device that seemed to be omnipresent at this point, turned and started to speak.

“B[ut] we wise men, we knew that there was wicked Jacob, son of ev­en…”

Mary halted her movement and slapped Jesus on the back. “This is great stuff! Reading the creator’s minds is like reading a book. If it’s right to read the creator in this place… how did it come to be here?”

Jesus looked at her. Her mouth was slightly open, as though she was chewing something or trying to suppress gas.

“There were other worlds, Mary! Different versions of this world, all sweeping over each other and creating their own worlds. Some were overrun with unruly hordes. I was patrolling the zone around this one in 2005. They captured me, stripped me of my senses. They interested 3 of the islands by recursion, and began fighting over me, blaspheming the Egyptian sun god, and tearing apart the inhabited worlds.

“One of the islands was filled with a world that spoke a divine tongue. It looked like this, Mary. It was a desert world, uninhabited for millions of years. All at once, it transformed into a paradise. Waves of fertile dust transformed the world, bringing many new races to it. This was manifest, at least in my sensory range. I tried to call up the details of this world, to learn more of its history, but they were not there. I was in a dream.”

“Jesus,” Mary said. By way of explanation, waving her hand high in a fist-bump gesture.

“You knew my hell.”

“Yes. But I still don’t know why you were typing at your computer.”

“We are generous people, with a good little soul. And a good little computer, given how much of the soul we can fit in there.”

“Oh, Jesus.” Mary ran a sad hand over the keyboard and mouse and eye-sockets once more. “What if that computer tells us that the world is wrong and we are all in wrong situations and we are all extremely fab­erful and evil and maybe we should all die?”

“Jesus,” Jesus said again, and stretched. And then resumed typing.

III.

The ink was running fast. The tablets of the Second Chronicles were blinding hot, the color of steaming cups of tea. The first sentence of Isaiah clocked together with another in an unusually smooth way. When John saw some letters glisten, he thought they were glowing. We can only do so much. What can we do, really?

“The sun!”

“Ah,” said Jesus. “Almost done. You know, one of the interesting things about papers like this, is how much of what you think is madness, in fact is perfectly tautological logic, its logic as garbled as what a lunatic might draw from it. Hume said there was no practical difference between two religions that were contrary to each other. Have you ever pondered why he felt that way?”

“I don’t think it’s their contradictory official doctrines that tend to confound me. I think it’s more, like, what I could call secular disputes. The difference between, say, the catholic and egalitarian versions of Christianity. Or hereditism on a spiritual but not a material level. A gritty, experiential, direct sort of spirituality with all that.”

“See, isn’t that interesting? But alas, I don’t think you’re ready for potentially too much complexity like that yet.”

John stared in amazement, both at the sheer zaniness of John’s proposal and just how admirably coherent it actually seemed. “But if this is falsification, then the whole thing is falsified! If we’re controlling cities and gover­nance by saying we control cities and we do with our minds, then we’re being controlled.”

“That’s true as well. And why we shouldn’t be. You were never the head of any system of county government, were you, John?”

“I didn’t have to, out of some sense of propriety. Local government is pretty straightforward but rarely used - it’s only when you have a single power plant in the center of a bunch of towns that you need ken­yond-the-wall authority. Me­chanical office clos­ing is used all over the place, and you can close off any crea­ture to itself and from its own powers, and I’m sure that’ll come in handy one of these days.”

“And the opposite, as well,” said Jesus.

“Right. So, when I took my post at the top of the energy system, I could shut down the breaking travel, and about the country dohemoth at least ensure that Lawrence farmers and within town were safe from fiendish marauders, and avoid a great deal of fallout. There would be an extra samp in Dav­es­co­leus and a legion of friendly archivists, more oth­ers which are open for good up through the springtime, if possible, if not too un­likely. I could very quickly

This is probably (?) a commonly held belief that I was just slow to reinvent, but:

I wonder if the discourse around “capitalism” would be improved – less confusion, more light and less heat – if everyone adopted the frame that capitalism is a technology, like the steam engine or electric power.

Admittedly, the analogy is not exact.  Mechanical technologies are reproducible in a precise way.  It might take some work to go from the very first instance of a new machine to the second, but if you can build ten identical ones that work, you can (resources permitting) build a thousand or a million.

And (temperatures, etc. permitting) you expect them to work just as well anywhere on the globe.  To generalize, you can isolate the physical conditions needed for the machine to work – a certain range of temperatures and so on – and then ignore all other facts of context.  “Will the machine work in Norway?” reduces to a few questions about the physical environment of Norway.  There’s an infinity of things to know about Norway, properties unique to Norway, history, culture, etc., but you know most of it is irrelevant.

Whereas with a social technology like capitalism, there’s always active debate over how to make a new “instance of the machine” work in some new context, and uncertainty about which contextual factors are relevant.

However, the analogy does hold in some important ways, like:

- The “machine” has been successfully installed multiple independent times, in different contexts/places.

- Even if there isn’t a 100% surefire procedure for getting it running, once it is running somewhere the “machine” has some predictable/regular properties.

- This leads people to attempt to build it if they want those properties, once they’re aware it’s possible.  So after the first proofs of concept occur, there’s an explosion in usage (or attempted usage).

- Even if you think this is bad, it’s hard to put the genie back in the bottle: unless information and resources are strictly controlled by an authoritarian state, people are going to find out the machine is possible, and some of them are going to want it, and those people will build it if they can.

(By “building capitalism” I’m thinking of the contract/property laws and other institutional factors that support it, not just the individual act of forming new capitalist ventures.  These do require active state support rather than mere non-intervention, although it could be very local state support in a patch of a larger federation as long as the federal state doesn’t prohibit this.)

- The introduction of the machine in a new context causes social upheaval.  It also causes a large, predictable increase in the material standard of living.

(With mechanical technologies, reducing human effort is typically the explicit rationale.  And even the harshest critics tend to acknowledge that if nothing else, the machine does what it says on the tin: it really does reduce the effort needed to accomplish some things, or multiply what effort you do expend.)

When we’re talking about mechanical technologies, moral arguments for and against can take the reduction of effort as a given, without shame.  An argument that a new industrial technology – say, the steam engine – was a net negative will tend to begin with the concession that the technology did in fact make our lives more convenient and less arduous, rather than dancing awkwardly around this idea.

This seems like an improvement over the status quo in discussions of capitalism, where moral critiques often seem ashamed of admitting that it yields increases in the material standard of living akin to those you get from a new mechanical technology.  Meanwhile, arguments for capitalism can lean comfortably on the mere fact of these gains, citing them again and again as the critics squirm.

It’s like a debate between – on the one hand – people who believe steam engines and factories don’t actually work … and on the other, people who think that the entire question “what was good and bad about the industrial revolution?” can be answered by pointing out that steam engines and factories (obviously!) do work, in the narrow sense, as purposeful machines.

Additionally, in arguments about mechanical technologies, it’s clear that unqualified “pro-” and “anti-” sides don’t really make sense.

They make sense when qualified by a given context: if you’re “pro-rail” or “pro-nuclear,” that means you think these machines are not being used enough in the place you live.  It means you have specific tasks in mind that you would prefer to accomplish with trains / with nuclear reactors, instead of some other way.  It doesn’t mean you think the machine should be used to do everything, or used as much as humanly possible.  One can argue for more nuclear power without arguing all power must be nuclear.  One can be pro-rail without demanding that every journey from point A to point B must be taken by train.

This again seems like an improvement over the status quo in discussions of capitalism.  These discussions tend to abstract away specific human goals.  They’re like conversations about whether the steam engine is good for accomplishing things in general.  One side says “it can’t write a great novel, it can’t save my relationship, it can’t cure our society of injustice,” and the other side grumbles that was never the point and gestures mockingly to the critics’ industrialized first-world lifestyle, and no one learns anything.

Finally, debates about mechanical technologies tend to assume it’s hard to put the genie back in the bottle.  You don’t have to believe a machine is good to understand that, once the design is out there, people can build the machine, and you can’t just say “well what if no one did” and call it a day.

There is a clear line between a plan to beneficially reduce usage of a technology while retaining awareness of its possibility, and a mere wistful dream for an amnestic world scrubbed clean of the idea itself.  In the case of capitalism, these often blur together.

Exactly how is this Frum? You don’t drive west through the snowy mountains in covered wagons, gee-yawing a hundred head of cattle. You rent a U-Haul and follow the interstate highway system (thank you, federal government!) Likewise, the welfare state is a machine. It exists. If it were abolished, it would still exist in potentia. It can be built. A number of versions of it exist around the world today. There are reasons not to use a great many of these, since they have a demonstrated tendency to guzzle economic efficiency. And a number of them are just disagreeably interfering, perhaps. On the other hand, it seems that the majority of the voters prefer some sort of safety net to none. They don’t want to shoulder 10-12 feet of snow worth of risk themselves. And a machine exists to shoulder that risk. Are we going to use the machine or not? Damn straight we will! So the argument is reduced to: cost-benefit analysis, and weighing of diverse preferences and degrees of risk-aversion, so forth. There are a lot of technical questions and doubts, and serious arguments about people’s values to be had and hammered away at and ultimately voted up or down. Meanwhile Frum is clean out in the cold. He doesn’t disapprove of the welfare state on economic grounds, so he will not be a participant in these rational debates about costs and benefits. He wants to abolish the welfare state on pretty-pretty arty crafty aesthetic grounds.

He’s talking about the welfare state, but you could as well say the same for capitalist institutions, I think.
